I began my sermon this morning by comparing the Bible to an “owner’s manual”. - Why do I typically preach straight through books of the Bible? _____________________________________________________________________ - How do I typically pick the next book we study through?_____________________________________________________________________ - What was one of the reasons I felt lead to study this book? _____________________________________________________________________1) The Author (v.1)- Who is the author of 1 Corinthians? ______________________- What is the significance of Paul declaring his position within the Church and how he received it? ______________________________________________________________________- Who is Sosthenes?______________________________________________________________________2) The Audience (v.2)- What made Corinth such an important city?______________________________________________________________________- The City of Corinth worshiped several deities, but one of the most prominent was the Temple of Aphrodite (Greek Goddess of Love). - What is the significance of this statement, “To the church of God which is at Corinth”?______________________________________________________________________- Paul makes to back-to-back references to what? __________________________- Why would Paul make back-to-back references to that? ___________________________________________________________________________________________- Who is the primary audience Paul is writing too? ____________________________
3) The Greeting (v.3) - What two things did Paul call his audience’s attention to in his greeting? a) _______________ b) _______________ - I offer two reasons as to why Paul gave this particular greeting… a) ___________________________________________________ b) ___________________________________________________ In closing, - The one thing most people know about Corinth is that is was a bad church, but Paul called the saints.- If Paul didn’t give up and reject Corinth, why do people feel they can reject the Church today?
